Parish History

Our parish was established in 1884 when Bishop McQuaid, the first Bishop of Rochester, expressed high hopes for the new little parish of 128 families "This good beginning will show that the great work  will go on year after year and that you will accomplish more and more... as we look at this small beginning of the church of the Holy Apostles, so far out from the center of the city, we  had little dream of what the parish may be fifty years  hence."  Bishop McQuaid assigned the new Parish with a missionary spirit as he named us after the twelve Apostles. Officially we were to be called "The Church of the Holy Apostles" because we were the 12th  parish to be formed in the catholic Diocese of Rochester.

The first 128 families of the Parish multiplied many times  over. Holy Apostles became a very large and active Parish within the Diocese of Rochester, and before you knew it Holy Apostles was helping  to establish new parishes just as once when we had been  established.

We at Holy Apostles have had so much history since its beginning days,  nevertheless it is to these early days that we look for inspiration as we continue on our spiritual journey in the years to come. When the cornerstone of our present Church was laid, Bishop McQuaid told the throng of people: "Be courageous my friends. I know that times are hard. But it is worth the sacrifice for you to work on with your Pastor for the up building of the church in this Parish. Bravely go to work and do what you can  for God's cause and His heavenly blessing will be upon you."

For us, these words are as true today as they were when they were first spoken. Nothing would inspire us more than to work courageously with our community for what God wants at Holy  Apostles and in our neighborhood.  May the missionary spirit which founded and launched Holy Apostles as a new Parish, come to us again! May the Holy Spirit come upon us to help us grow, be fed and nourished and to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors and our world.

May our Lord, receive the honor and the glory and the praise! May we always be thankful! May Holy Apostles have bright future of powerful and mighty and lasting blessings!  Amen!

More about our Parish

From the very beginning of Holy Apostles Parish, ground was broken "ln the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" to establish us to meet the spiritual needs of our neighborhood ... And so many years later, to this very day, we are actively involved in this missionary call.

We were originally given our name of the Church of the Holy Apostles because we were the twelfth church built in the Diocese of Rochester.

Bishop McQuaid assigned us with a missionary spirit by naming us after the Twelve Apostles. This name carries our identity, and therefore, it is very special. In light of this, I am convinced that we are now being inspired to take on an apostle-like missionary call.

As Jesus sent the Apostles forth as His messengers so we are being sent forth now to reach out to others with the Good News of God's love, mercy and forgiveness!

As Jesus called the Apostles in mission, He now calls us, "Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15) As Jesus loves, so are we to do! We give thanks to God for placing upon us as a parish, this missionary call. We accept this as our mission and News of the lord and God's love for all!

We desire to do all we can to share this in our neighborhood and to invite our neighbors to "taste and see he goodness of the lord!" (Psalm 34:9)

We pledge ourselves in service to them spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically, and in the name of Jesus to heal the sick, bury the dead, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, visit the shut-in, be with the imprisoned, and care for the poor in the many ways they come to us. It is our deep desire to respect and celebrate the gift of all life and to be a voice for each one. May many be brought to God through our actions of love!

Of course, we understand that we cannot be instruments of that love of God unless we first have it ourselves. "Love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12)

It is in being both a loving and vibrant faith community that others will join us at Holy Apostles ...

"All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the Apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all." (Acts 4:32-33)

Obviously, we do not take a call like this lightly, and we realize that just like the Apostles, we need to completely rely on God and devote ourselves to the lord with much prayer.

“… They went up to the upper room where they were staying, Peter and John, and James and Andrew, and Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alpheus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All those in one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with His brothers." (Acts 1 :13-14)

We have joyfully claimed Pentecost as Holy Apostles Parish Feast Day, and we rejoice and give thanks for the many and various ways that the Holy Spirit empowers and dwells within each baptized person. We experience this as we celebrate Mass together, pray for each other, share our joys and sorrows, give gifts and talents, and work side by side to more greatly share the love of God with each other and all! We trust that the Holy Spirit is doing to us now what he did for the Apostles back then!

"When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witness for Me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

Jesus said to them, "Peace be with you. As the Father sent Me, so 1 send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20:21-22)

When the cornerstone of our present church building was laid, Bishop McQuaid told the throng of people, " ... Bravely go to work and do what you can for God's cause and His heavenly blessing will be upon you."

For me, these words are as true today as they were when they were first spoken. Nothing would inspire me more than to work courageously with all of you for what God is calling us to be at Holy Apostles and in our neighborhood.

My hope and prayer for you and all of us together at Holy Apostles is that we will be filled to overflowing with the love and the joy of the Holy Spirit and the peace of the lord!

So, there you have it! Please use this Photo Directory to come to know your brothers and sisters at Holy Apostles even better! learn the names of those you don't know and reach out to them ... By all means pray for them! Let us become the most loving and alive faith community we can!

... May the missionary spirit which founded and first launched Holy Apostles as a new parish come to us again! May the Holy Spirit come upon us to help us grow, to be fed spiritually and to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors and our world. May Our lord receive the honor, the glory, and the praise! May we always be thankful! May Holy Apostles have a bright future of powerful, mighty
and lasting blessings!

"Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen."

Love, In Our Lord,

Father Tony

 Padre Tony
